Volunteers

According to a recent study, the estimated value of an hour of volunteer work is $20.85. We've had over 450 volunteers who've donated their time over the past year, which means that our volunteers have given us over $60,000 worth of your time to fight breast cancer!

The Komen Richmond Affiliate is a volunteer driven organization dedicated to furthering our mission and reaching out into the community making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. As Richmond Affiliate and the Richmond Race for the Cure® continue to grow — so does year round involvement in the community. This means that more volunteers are needed to manage, organize and lead our race committees, our new programs, and our long range planning efforts.

Komen credits its success to the many outstanding volunteers who share their energy, ideas, talents and enthusiasm. The Komen Richmond Affiliate offers hundreds of volunteer opportunities each year, from handing out water at the Komen Richmond Race for the Cure®, to becoming a community spokesperson on the importance of early detection. Whether you are looking for a year-round commitment or a one-time event, The Komen Richmond Affiliate has a place for you.

We have an array of programs and events that require volunteers to make them happen. We can help you find an opportunity that suits your special talent and your time! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please fill out our Volunteer Application and e-mail it to volunteer@komenrichmond.org or call 804-358-7223.

Increase Your Impact

In addition to volunteering at events like the Race for the Cure or becoming a Komen Educator, here are a few other ways you can get involved year-round. Rally for the Cure

Rally for the Cure is an awareness program that provides a simple platform for people to educate their friends, family and community about breast health and breast cancer. Rally can be incorporated into an existing event or you can design an event around the breast cancer awareness theme.

Most people chose to Rally through golf or tennis. However the program is easily adaptable to other activities such as, bridge, bunco, and other fitness pursuits like yoga, spinning and swimming. Sign up at www.rallyforthecure.com, invite participants, collect entry fees, and enjoy a fun event while fighting breast cancer!

Professionals Inspiring New Komen Knowledge

Young professionals have amazing potential to make an impact in the fight against breast cancer. Last year, a group of Richmond's brightest young women and men got together to make this impact a reality by forming P.I.N.K.K. Their mission is to raise awareness and funds to support Komen and our local community as we all battle this disease. For more information on upcoming P.I.N.K.K. events and how you can get involved visit our website, www.komenrichmond.org/PINKK.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jen Miller

Jen first got involved with Komen Richmond as a Race team captain in 2007 but says that "just doing the Race wasn't enough...I am passionate about finding a cure as my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor and my best friend's mother is a 3 time breast cancer survivor. I want to help find a cure so that my best friend and her twin daughters never have to face breast cancer." Since then Jen has been a dedicated and vital part of the Volunteer Development Committee and joined the Race Committee in 2009, becoming the new Team Relations Chair for the Race last year. Jen found her passion for volunteering when she first signed up through HandsOn Greater Richmond's volunteer calendar. In addition to all of her work here at Komen, she helps plan HandsOn Day, a community-wide day of service coming up in October. We can't thank Jen enough for the many hours she has devoted to ending breast cancer!
