Funding for Local & National Programs
Up to 75% of the net revenue raised from our Race for the Cure®, special events, and the generosity of individual and corporate donors are distributed right back into the community of Central Virginia. The remaining 25% directly supports Komen’s National Research Grant Program.
Since 1998, the Komen Richmond Affiliate has raised over $4 million for both local programs and Komen’s National Research Grant Program. We are currently funding 14 innovative projects totaling $590,367. Additionally, in 2009 we contributed $227,047 to fund breast cancer research through Komen’s National Research Grant Program.
The Komen Richmond Affiliate is organized by hundreds of volunteers. This enables the Affiliate to keep its administrative costs as low as possible and allows the organization to fund many worthy programs that provide assistance to women who have traditionally been medically underserved. Our net proceeds will target local grant programs that:
- Pay for mammograms for women who cannot afford them.
- Educate women, particularly those who are medically underserved, about the importance of breast self-examination, professional screening, and mammograms.
- Focus on treatment support as well as providing easier access to existing treatment resources for women with breast cancer.
